Thanks Sundowner i just accessed it here at work. i see that they have followed exactly the same lines of research as on here with the same result. i doubt the 16 E lancaster is the same man as in fact an E lancaster on the 1871 Census is a sergeant in the 1st battalion Queens West surrey which could be him.Edward Mortimer Lancaster born 1865 in Leeds is the only suspect in my book, but unless any mention can be found of him in the 1881 or 1891 census anywhere we don't know if he joined the regiment. It did occur to me that people are assuming he carved the whole thing, but maybe the regiment bit was added by another vandal? There are numerous carvings on the rocks so it might be TWO people who did them!
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!

Just read the debate on the other website and really pleased that you seem to have tracked your man down and even got a picture. Imagine explaining to that 17 year old boy that his carving would cause a written debate amongst people all over the world in 130 years time!

I have a 36 year old E Mortimer Barraclough on the 1901 census with a young family, living in Ilkley.I have a 50 year old Manchester soldier buried in Salford War cemetary.Anyone good at genealogy? do we know this guys rank? You can't say that about him, you hardly know the feller!

I was up at the Cow and Calf at the weekend and saw this graffiti again which reminded me of this thread. Disappointingly, I can't seem to access the link below anymore. Did anyone save the info or the picture I think there was posted?http://www.ilkley-more.com/ilkley-forum ... rocks.html

Infuriating when someone does this isn't it - learned a long time ago to copy rather than link anything I wanted but still come unstuck . See there already is an enquiry in their general chat about this, presumably yours.A society close to us rebuilt their site a while ago and the same thing happened, fortunately turned out everything was there, just with very helpful (not) different addresses!

Looks like one of the original posters on the Ilkley site knew where it had been moved to so I've managed to track it down!
