heres a nice building with a clock that still works.where the traffic lights are, near halfway house pub,is a big sandstone building, its been empty as long as i live here 1999.its well looked after, all the doors blocked off with steel plates.at the top of the building is a clock.it still works so somone must look after the place.ive looked on a few sites,i carnt seem to find the history of the place.it would be nice to find out.there some writing on the clock, mabye a date or the maker, but my eyes are not as good as they were so i carnt see it.any idears what it used to be.it must still be looked after, otherwise the clock wouldnt work, dont know much about clocks, but they must need winding up?

I think the building you refer to used to be 'Courtaulds'.I passed there every evening when I worked on Grangefield Estate.

Courtaulds were indeed a very big player in the textile industry. They specialised in artificial fibres and even made an artificial meat called Kesp. ({K}ourtaulds Edible Spun Protein ! )It says it all here complete with picture :http://timeinthecountry.mysite.wanadoo- ... e8.htmlThe building on Stanningley road was just another mill. I always thought it was a rather nice one. If the clock is still going it's probably electrically wound and the power is still on.No doubt it will soon be yet another block of apartments.
We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.

Tell you who used to go on about it (Kesp) Ca. 1980 ...Dr. Magnus Pyke.http://www.viewimages.com/Search.aspx?m ... =GoogleWho said at that time that in ten years time (He meant 1990) after all the petrol had run out and we were reduced to eating man made food (made from gas tar or similar) firms like Courtaulds would have to employ artists to put in the lines of gristle that appeared on the slices af artificial meat.He was mad, of course.Notice on the photo his knitting was no more successful than his forecasting (see how much he's got done).

I suppose you have to be very brave or slightly mad(or both) to try and predict how the world will be in 10 years time.I remember Magnus Pike well,as a lovable eccentric.
