What Happened to 111 to 117 Roundhay Road!?

Looking at a pic of what's alleged to be 111 Roundhay Road on Leodis....

http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... OMMENT=YES

Google modern view https://goo.gl/maps/iEkTaxutpW12

If you look at this part of Roundhay Road now, there is a space where these houses would have been so they must have been demolished. BMF Motor Factors is at 109, then a space then the next house is 119. Looking at the side of 119 it's quite clear that the brickwork is much more modern than the rest of the building...

Anyone got any ideas when/why/ if these houses were demolished and the if Leodis is correctly attributing the pic to that location?

As stated on LEODIS.. "Properties at 111 to 117 Roundhay Road were demolished in the late 1970s to create pedestrian access to Bank Side Street, which runs behind the row of terraces.

Is that correct though? Seems like a waste to just create a path.

I agree it seems a waste but perhaps there was structural damage (fire, subsidence....) that meant the houses had to be demolished anyway. The right half of BMF is obviously new build.

I don't recall how wide pedestrians were in the 1970's but would be surprised if they were as wide as 4 houses :)
I have always understood that one of the houses was involved in a serious fire, and became unstable. I was not in the fire service at that time, so I don't know exactly were the idea came from. It might be worth checking the news papers for any reports in the Local History Library?

Only 4 houses demolished here, look how many were demolished to create BANSTEAD PARK.
