Buildings numbered 14 to 18 on The Calls have been demolished.

Post by Leodian »

Passing by on August 9 2016 I noticed that the very old buildings numbered 14 to 18 on The Calls (Leeds) have been demolished. They seem to have been derelict for many years and part of at least 18 had been knocked down some time back. Final demolition of them has however been very recent as I never saw it about a couple of weeks back. It was very hard to take photos from The Calls due to metal security boards, so I had to take the first two here holding my camera between gaps in that boarding and hope something came out! The third photo was a view of the site taken from the junction of The Calls and Crown Street.

I don't know how old the buildings were but they were likely to be very old. Though they were derelict and in very poor condition a bit of the history of Leeds has still been lost.

As I assume the limit of 3 photos per post still applies I shall post 3 more photos of the site in my next post.

These are the other 3 photos (see my post above) of the site where the buildings numbered 14 to 18 on The Calls were before their very recent demolition. The photos were taken from across the River Aire on August 9 2016.

The first photo is a general one showing the site. The second is a zoomed-in one and a feature in it looks like it could have been a shute (it is bricked up behind) that if it had been it would have opened to street level on The Calls. The third is a zoomed-in view in which part of the Corn Exchange is visible which may not have been seen from that angle for many years!

I shall post a final related photo in my next post.

This is the final photo (see my post above). It is one of two notices in relation to planning applications for work at the site where the buildings numbered 14 to 18 had been. The notices were at the junction of The Calls and Crown Street. One was dated 5 August 2016 and asked for comments by 26 August 2016! The other is dated 12 August 2016 (thus after I took the photo on August 9 2016!) and asked that comments be made by 2 September 2016! Considering that the buildings had been demolished the notices have me very :?.

The brick collectors paradise.

I am really surprised it took so long to demolish as it seemed to be falling down and only held up by the supporting scaffolding in the recent 20 years that I have walked past it.
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Here are three maps of the buildings, only the 1964 one shows it as a warehouse.

Did you see the Benchmark Leo

Thanks buffaloskinner for those very interesting maps. :)

I notice that the buildings that included the Riverside Mission Church and the Riverside Mission Institute were still there in the 1964 map. As they are not there now I wonder when they were demolished and does anyone recall them? Nice to see the oft discussed on Secret Leeds (but not for some while now ;) ) Mill Goit that is shown on the 1891 map.

Thanks to liits post on Feb 24 2016 11:57 I found out about the Bench Mark on building number 20 and then saw that worn BM on March 8. I forgot to look again on August 9 when I was taking photos of the demolition of numbers 14-18 but the BM should still be there as the frontage of number 20 was not affected.

Edit added on August 15 2016. My "I notice that the buildings that included the Riverside Mission Church and the Riverside Mission Institute were still there in the 1964 map. As they are not there now I wonder when they were demolished and does anyone recall them?" is wrong (see my post on August 14) as at least the small building (Riverside Mission Room) that was part of the riverside mission church is still there (but derelict).

A fascinating discussion!

Further to the maps posted above, here is an extract from a Goad Map showing the warehouse occupants in, we think, 1924. More Goad Maps - plans showing building usage; originally created for fire insurance purposes, but now a wonderfully useful source of historical information - are available in the Central Library (right up to the present day).

We also checked our OS maps to see if we could narrow down a date when the Riverside Mission Church and Institute were demolished: both buildings are there on the 1952 map (as expected), but have disappeared by the 1969 edition. So, with the evidence from the 1964 map, it seems the buildings must have been demolished sometime in the mid-1960s.

More information about our full map collection (if anyone's interested!) can be found in this research guide: https://secretlibraryleeds.files.wordpr ... -guide.pdf

Thanks SecretLibraryLeeds and hyperion3 for your help which is appreciated :).

The photo (http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4852839) showing the derelict but still standing Riverside Mission Institute building that was taken on Monday, 17 August, 2015 amazed me that it was still there so recently as I should recall it but I do not! I'm rubbish recalling what was where! I wonder why it was apparently not shown on the 1969 map?

For whatever reason I cannot get further than the main pages brought up through the http://arthostel.org.uk/rooms/the-river ... sion-room/ link.

Edit added shortly after posting. I'm getting  now as the derelict Riverside Mission Room building is seen in this photo that I took on August 9 2016 though I had not spotted it!

In a post of mine on Aug 12, 2016 7:10 pm I stated "I notice that the buildings that included the Riverside Mission Church and the Riverside Mission Institute were still there in the 1964 map. As they are not there now I wonder when they were demolished and does anyone recall them?" but that is clearly wrong for at least the Riverside Mission Room. My apologies .
