Empty music/entertainment spaces

Post by tobeye »

Hi there,

I am studying at Leeds college of art and doing a project on disused spaces and have started to look into disused night clubs, theatres and also how some nightclubs have been transformed into the places they are today. I was wondering you could help because I don't know a huge amount about the history of clubbing within Leeds and where used to be the best places to go and If I can visit them.

Many thanks :D

Hi Tobeye

On the start page for Secret Leeds scroll down the page to Leeds Life and click on Nightlife, that should hopefully answer many of your queries
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Does the former Odeon Cinema on the upper floor of the Merrion Centre count ?? Its lain empty since it closed an incredibly long time ago which is just astonishing.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

As I no longer live in Leeds I wondered if the block of empty shops that Peter Stringfellow and his brother opened as "Cinderella and Rockafellas" nightclubs in1970 were still there. This was really the IN place to go at that time. situated somewhere behind Merrion St.
Peter made a great success of the place, sold it on the the Mecca people and then it quickly went down the tube.

Certainly covered in at least one other thread Jack the downstairs is now a Wetherspoons (Stick or Twist) as the upstairs was and still is a Grovesnor Casino. Its now in the shadow of Leeds Arena which at least means the area has been spruced up a bit.

Just a word of caution Jack. Given the proximity to Little London and beng a Wetherspoons (cheap beer) the clientele is sometimes not the best

Thanks for the advice Pal, I will stick to my plan to find that old Pub that has reopened in a yard off of Briggate.
