Some News about Temple Newsome

Post by blackprince »

Reading about this in my national newspaper yesterday really brightened up my morning.

I was often taken to Temple Newsome as a child. I enjoyed the tram ride , an ice-cream in the old stable buildings and a walk round the grounds and hot-houses. Sometimes, if it rained, we would go on a tour of the house which I always remember as terribly boring and dreary. How much more interesting it would have seemed if we had known that the former owner was the mistress of the Prince of Wales and that she had cut out pictures of birds from the world's most expensive book and pasted them on her wallpaper. I will add a visit to Temple Newsome to see the restoration to my bucket list, for the next time I visit Leeds

It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

I would echo the above word for word as we were taken there as kids, what I always found strange was how small the suits of armour were when I imagined knights of old as portrayed in the cinema. yes I shall also visit again hopefully this coming summer..

Yes Jack I had the same thought about the small suits of armour. I wasn't convinced by the grown-ups off-the-cuff explanation that people were smaller in medieval times!
The other Temple Newsam ( spelt correctly this time) memory I have is the Henry Moore statue of a reclining woman which was sited there about 1955. It was put on a plinth in the middle of the large grass field in front of the house. It was regarded a bit sniffily by my grandparents who probably thought it was too risqué for a 7 year old.
