Re: Ballroom Blitz
The planning application for change of use (which the YEP hinted at without bothering to provide any links) is at https://publicaccess.leeds.gov.uk/onlin ... Y1JJBJNK00. In the list of documents the most interesting one is probably the Design and Heritage Statement which includes photos of what the place looks like now and what they plan to do with it.

Thanks for that link mhoulden .mhoulden wrote:The planning application for change of use (which the YEP hinted at without bothering to provide any links) is at https://publicaccess.leeds.gov.uk/onlin ... I notice that in the 'Site Notice and Advert' dated 22 July 2016 it states "The notice was posted on : 5 August 2016". That must be what is known as forward planning! .

My most memorable moment at the Scala Ballroom was seeing Sonny Binnick & Sally Brock giving an exhibition of ballroom dancing, they were the current World Champions at the time,..that was in the early 1950s

Re: Ballroom Blitz
I would like to think that after John Peters (Furniture) vacated the premises the incoming tenant would not want to get involved in a costly removal of the old lift which went from ground floor to the top floor plus the beautiful marble staircase which is not only a show piece but wold be costly to replace. I would like to think that both are still there.
Lets hope so.

Re: Ballroom Blitz
The Design and Heritage statement doesn't have a lot of clues about the old ballroom - just the ground floor (ex shops / cinema auditorium) and first floor (store room for the shops - presumably added in as a mezzanine level across the cinema auditorium).mhoulden wrote:The planning application for change of use (which the YEP hinted at without bothering to provide any links) is at https://publicaccess.leeds.gov.uk/onlin ... However, the floor plans of the second floor ('level 3') do have some tantalising details that suggest the ballroom is still intact and will remain so after the refurb. Basically it appears to be a large empty space with a stage at one end. The proposed plan states 'NO WORKS TO THIS LEVEL', although there is a suggestion that the toilets at one end may be 'retained as a heritage asset'.
So someone has clearly been up there as part of this whole process - wish they'd let us see the photos!

And here's a picture of the 'tea room' at the Scala from Leodis - from the original brochure I think. Presumably this is the same space that was subsequently the ballroom:

Ah - the good news is that someone on Facebook is highly persuasive and has managed to get inside and confirm that the rumours of a dusty forgotten ballroom are indeed true:

The bad news? It's going to be converted into an EasyHotel. What that means for the ballroom isn't clear...

Re: Ballroom Blitz
I should probably Google but it sounds like a budget hotel rather than a 5* establishment that might hold afternoon tea dances and evening balls and thus could utilise a ballroom

Re: Ballroom Blitz
www.easyhotel.com Given the branding and colour scheme I'd say it's part of the same group as EasyJet and rooms from £15 says its not the sort of chain that would find much use in a ballroom.

Re: Ballroom Blitz
The best hope would seem to be that either (a) it's not included in the lease, like it wasn't for Miss Selfridge or (b) they realise the worth of the space and decide to sublet it to someone who can do something with it.
