A fascinating thread and excellant pictures.I applaud a photographer who stands out in the rain so we can view in warmth and comfort.
Are there any pictures of the Cattle Market pub drapesy? It's one I walked passed many times on my way to Elland Rd.but never called in.

This is the only picture I've managed to track down of the 'Cattle Market Hotel' (from Leodis as ever.)

It looks like the photographer was just getting a shot of the street [Danube Place]prior to redevelopment - and the pub at the end of street is captured almost by chance. - shame its only part of it we can see.

Before this Cattle Market (Officially the Victoria Cattle Market) opened in 1886 Leeds Cattle Market (known as Smithfield Market) was at the top of North Street , where 'Lovell Park ' now is . The pub serving this market (Smithfield Hotel) was on the opposite side of North Street and, believe it or not, the building is still in existence, although it hasn't been a pub for many years.
I'll get a pic of it and post it (if I can) as soon as poss. Regular Smiley

I've discovered a different picture on Leodis of the market, that I missed before. It was taken at the same time as the pic on page1 of this thread (1920) but shows 'Bully' a bit better

Actually on studying the above picture and comparing it with the one on page one (reproduced again here for comparison) they are not pictures of exactly the same place. I think they are pictures of different ends of the same building - The picture below is a view of the south side - the same place and the same 'Bully' that I photographed on p1 of the thread. The other picture must be the north side of the building, with it's own 'bully'- presumably demolished!!
Confusing I know but if you look at some of the details I think you'll agree.( According to Leodis both photos were taken on the same day, so it can't be a case of changes over time)

It's a shame that's the only pic.I seem to recall the front of the pub was set back a few yards from the road side and there was an arrangement of iron railings between the pub and the road
(cattle pens?).Could it be possible that a prize bull or two was tethered up there while the cattleman slaked his thirst?

I know this is years out of date but I thought the warehouse was also a "cash and carry" type shop? I could have sworn I helped my brother carry a few cases of wine out of the ex market building a decade or so ago.
Surely somebody has a card for there and can ask to take a few pictures?
