In this context, and at that time, the word 'waste' just means 'not inhabited or cultivated'
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

It also had another more sinister meaning as well,it referred to areas that had been laid bare by the Conquerors men during the "Harrying of the North"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrying_of_the_North

However it seems Leeds was not subject to Williams wrath, and the Domesday book seems to indicate that it was actually more prosperous than preconquest times,so it would appear that the term "waste" in Leeds is what Drapesy says.

Indeed, there are a number of springs and wells marked on the 1850 map in the area, unfortunately the cd rom which i had it on wont work on modern windows.

I think it was covered on the wells and spas thread IIRC

Here is a pretty good slide show of the history of Kirkgate going back to middle ages. It has the remains of old walls uncovered by the demolition of the White Cloth Hall. Some are the remains of the medieval Hospitium, and priests chantry house.

You know I never took another look after they first knocked it down Csnosi, I think we were all a bit annoyed it was flattened. We weren't looking for artifacts, just cursing the rubble pile of bricks at the time Wink
