About 10 years ago they were also excavating the same area and found an old whiskey bottle, antler from a deer and some other stuff. Would have been in the cellar of the Market Tavern.
In regard to the Market Tavern the mention of the "notorious Market Tavern" amused me on page 12 of the '10 May 2014 14/01877 Add. Phase 1 Archaeological Report Part 1'. This is an extract that contains the mention:-

"The last surviving buildings on the site were a row of shops fronting George Street, but these were single-storey construction that had replaced the 19th-century buildings. This row of shops and the last 19th-century building, the notorious Market Tavern situated at the corner of Harewood Street and George Street, were demolished in the mid-1990s. There are currently two remaining buildings on the site; the former Weights and Measures building located at the corner of Millgarth and George Street and the electricity sub-station in the north-west corner of the site."

PS. I happened to spot that when doing a rapid scan of some of the first pages of that very long document (I have not tried to do more!). The document can be accessed through the excellent link in Cardiarm's post on Wed Jan 21, 2015 2:23 pm.

I noticed today (Feb 12 2015) that there is a clear change in the appearance of the site at the Harewood Street/Eastgate end so I thought I would take some photos. Some chance with all the traffic on Eastgate! I did take however the first photo here at 11:26 from Harewood Street. The second and third photos are from the Victoriagate webcam images today. The first is the scene at 12:50 and is similar to the traffic that was around when I was there for some minutes on Eastgate after taking the photo I did. The third is the webcam view at 11:01. I clearly should have been there then!

JOHN LEWIS PROGRESS
9th of March 2015

Techcrete have completed the first parts of our cladding for the John Lewis building in Leeds. The 5m panels will start to arrive on site in spring to get installed over the summer as the concrete frame of the building continues to rise.

I took this photo today (March 17 2015) showing a view of the development from the roundabout at the bottom of Eastgate. Some of the building has recently begun to be readily visible above the security boards around the site there.

It was not until I looked at the downloaded photo that I spotted what contains some misleading/incorrect information on the traffic sign! The sign points up Eastgate and its wording states "City Bus Station. Coach Station. Grand Theatre. City Varieties. Cinemas". By the time a driver (even a pedestrian) who may want a station it is too late and if they do drive up Eastgate thinking that is the way they may get into a right mess finding their way! :?

PS. I'm unsure what the cinemas (plural) are as only The Vue at The Light is that way (the Everyman in the Trinity Centre is somewhat off that way).

PPS. There are notices at the site that state that an application has gone in for a "Large Casino" at Victoria Gate.

Yes Leo, it's going to come on the back of the Casino licences that were bid for some years back.
Manchester won the big licence and Leeds a medium one, however, Gordon Brown scrapped the big licence and Leeds has been sat on the medium licence ever since.
Don't quote me on the tale word for word ,it's just from recollection

These are 3 photos that I took at the site on June 16 2015. The first shows a new entrance that has recently appeared on The Headrow frontage (that entrance was not there as far as I recall when I last passed by a couple or so weeks back). The second shows some cladding on the Harewood Street side (what's left of Harewood Street!). The third shows a ready-built 'brick wall' that had been delivered. I could not definitely tell if it was made of real bricks (the wall did look very real) or just a fake brick wall (probable).

Cheers for that buffaloskinner :). The time-lapse video does show the progress well. This is the link to the Victoriagate webcams (the time-lapse has clearly used scenes from the archive of Camera 1):- http://hammerson.reachtimelapse.co.uk/victoriagate/

Getting up high seems likely to be the only way to get photos now, as it is very difficult to get reasonable ones from ground level outside the development as most of the structure is so tall now.
