Thank you Si, cnosni and The Parksider for your kind words. Should you be interested, I’ve scanned all the Godfrey maps of Leeds and am in the process of “cleaning” them up which is a slow, laborious process. If you would like any more bits of them posted I’m more than willing to help if I can.

HiNot sure if it's of any use, but I've always been fascinated by this archway, and on my way past it last night, I noticed that the word 'Jackson' is just about visible on the right of the doorway.

While searching for information on the Quaker burial ground for Leodian's thread, I came across this article which explains the history of the building at 10 Water Lane and includes a photo with the door in situ:http://www.exploringleeds.co.uk/2011/04 ... -lane.html

Isn't there still the street sign on it that says Water Lane??, I seem to remember being slightly surprised by it once when finding a parking space on there one day

On maps from the 1950s to the 1990s the building in your link is designated as 2 Water Lane. No. 10 was where the lone archway is now (and mentioned in the link I gave in my post above).

Thanks buffaloskinner - that makes much more sense!I think the word under Jackson could be draper.

The 'arch' is still there as seen in these 2 photos that I took on August 15 2017. It's an interesting relic feature that surprises me in that it has not yet been demolished (I doubt it is listed).
